KNOW GOD Shepherd’s Student Ministry (SSM) is committed to introducing students to God, and helping them have an accurate understanding of who He is, what He’s done, and how we should respond to Him. Our desire is that the heart of each student will be inclined toward God and receptive to His saving power through Jesus Christ. Since God has revealed Himself through His Word, a primary focus of our ministry is biblical literacy. Discipleship begins by helping students understand the major storyline of Scripture and the God who is behind it all. That, in turn, lays a foundation for a lifetime of spiritual growth and service. Hebrews 4:12; Psalm 119:130; 2 Peter 3:18; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Psalm 1:2-3 FIND COMMUNITY God has designed growth to take place in the context of community. People—especially teenagers—need godly relationships to help them mature in their faith. We’re committed to creating opportunities where students can find and cultivate healthy relationships with peers and adult mentors. We believe it’s important for students to enjoy the gift of friendship and pursue accountability. Hebrews 10:24-25; Proverbs 27:17; Romans 12:4-5; Romans 15:5-7; Psalm 133:1-3 5CHANGE THE WORLD Since children are designed to desire and experience more independence as they grow older, our goal is for students to catch the vision of what God could do through their lives to impact the world around them. Discipleship doesn’t stop with merely knowing things about God and His Word. We challenge students to embrace God’s call to make a positive difference in the world around them by serving their community and leading people to the feet of Jesus. Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; Matthew 20:26-28; Mark 12:30-31; 1 John 4:11 GUIDING PRINCIPLES As we teach, plan activities and events, establish new ministries and engage students personally, we have several principles that guide us. Even though parts of our ministry will vary and change, these principles are “constants” that keep our ministry focused. • Everything we do is subject to the Word of God. • The Bible is true and Jesus is the main character. • True and lasting life-change is rooted in the gospel. • Ministry takes place in the context of loving relationships. • Parents are the primary disciplemakers. • There is value in fun and church should be a happy place. • Safety is part of our stewardship responsibility. • The pursuit of excellence brings glory to God. 6677Next >
